"क़ुदरत का खिलौना": Imam Manzil Islam of Rahmania Jame Masjid, Morigaon, receives a rigorous 20-year sentence under the POCSO Act for the sexual abuse of a minor boy, marking a significant legal precedent in Assam's commitment to protecting children

On July 19th, the Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) of Morigaon district handed down a significant verdict, sentencing a cleric to 20 years in jail for the sexual abuse of a minor child. The accused, identified as Imam Manzil Islam, had been serving as the Imam of the Dakshin Balidonga Rahmania Jame Masjid in the district.

The charges stemmed from an incident reported to Bhuragaon Police Station on March 25th, 2023, where Imam Manzil Islam was accused of raping a minor boy. Following the accusation, the Bhuragaon police conducted a thorough investigation, during which Imam Manzil Islam was described as having a "questionable character." His arrest and subsequent trial culminated in the recent verdict.
This case has drawn attention to the serious issue of abuse within positions of trust, prompting calls for stricter oversight and accountability mechanisms to safeguard children and other vulnerable groups in community institutions. The lengthy sentence reflects the judiciary's commitment to upholding justice and deterring similar offenses in the future.
Last week, significant advancements occurred in the legal proceedings against Imam Manzil Islam. The Special Judge of the POCSO court rendered a conviction against him after carefully reviewing the evidence presented in case no. 39/2023 and POCSO case 69/2023, both registered at the Morigaon Bhuragaon police station.
The court proceedings, led by Smt. M. A. Ahmed, the Additional Sessions Judge cum Special POCSO Judge in Morigaon, concluded with a firm verdict. Reports confirm that Monjil Islam was found guilty and consequently sentenced to 20 years in prison under Section 6 of the POCSO Act specifically for the Bhuragaon PS case no 39/2023. This decision underscores the court's commitment to addressing crimes under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act with utmost seriousness.

During the trial, the evidence presented was overwhelming and damning, revealing that the Imam had sexually abused a minor child. Moreover, it was disclosed that the accused had also threatened the victim with death, further complicating his crimes. In response to these grave actions, the court imposed not only a lengthy period of rigorous imprisonment but also levied a monetary fine of ₹10,000 against Imam Manzil Islam. It is noteworthy that the time Imam Manzil Islam has already spent in jail, amounting to approximately 1 year and 4 months, will be deducted from his total jail term.
This case highlights the judiciary's rigorous approach to enforcing the law and protecting vulnerable populations, especially minors, from abuse and exploitation.
The Morigaon Police took to the micro-blogging site X to announce a significant update regarding the ongoing case of Monjil Islam. Their statement was clear and concise: “In connection with Bhuragaon PS case no 39/2023, the Accused person namely Monjil Islam has been convicted RI for 20 years U/S 6 of POCSO Act. by Hon’ble Addl session Judge cum special POCSO Judge, Morigaon.”

The use of the platform underscores the importance of keeping the community informed about critical legal outcomes, especially those involving severe crimes under the POCSO Act, which deals with the protection of children against sexual offenses.
The post on site X by the Morigaon Police reflects their commitment to transparency and public engagement, ensuring that citizens are aware of the actions and outcomes of significant cases within their jurisdiction. By disclosing the conviction and the lengthy sentence of rigorous imprisonment handed down to Monjil Islam, the police department reinforces the message of accountability and the severe repercussions of violating children's rights and safety.
