"इश्क-ए-नादान": 42-year-old Mubarak Khan, already married and a father of three, lures 22-year-old Shruti Tiwari into a live-in relationship in Damoh, signing an affidavit for a future Sharia-based marriage, this sparks intense protests from Hindu groups
In Damoh, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, a situation that has ignited significant public outcry has come into the spotlight. This incident involves Mubarak Khan, a 42-year-old Muslim man, and Shruti Tiwari, a 22-year-old Hindu woman. The case has been perceived as an instance of 'love jihad', a term used to describe allegations of Muslim men targeting Hindu women for conversion to Islam under the guise of love.

On Saturday, 13th January, the Hindu rights group Sanatan Sangh and activist Updesh Rana organized a protest at Ambedkar Chauraha in Damoh. This demonstration was in response to the unfolding events involving Mubarak Khan and Shruti Tiwari, which have caused considerable disturbance within the community.
According to reports from local media, Shruti's family has made serious allegations against Mubarak Khan. They claim that in December of the previous year, Khan arrived at their home armed with a knife and took Shruti away against her will. Following this alleged abduction, it is reported that the pair entered into a live-in relationship, a living arrangement where a couple lives together without being married.
The family's immediate reaction was to seek help from the police to locate and bring Shruti back home. A missing person's report was filed with the authorities, prompting a police investigation into her whereabouts. The protest by the Hindu groups put additional pressure on the police, leading to them locating Shruti. She was then taken to the One Stop Centre, a facility providing support and counselling, for an assessment and assistance.
The reports further indicate that Shruti first encountered Mubarak in Bhopal, where their initial meeting took place.
Notably, there were media reports suggesting that the police were initially not allowing Shruti's parents to meet her. This aspect of the case has added to the complexity of the situation, as it involves the legal rights of the individuals in the relationship and the concerns of their families.

A report by ZeeNews highlighted a critical point in this case: since Mubarak and Shruti have submitted an affidavit confirming their live-in arrangement and Shruti is legally an adult, the law does not permit forcible separation of the couple. This legal perspective underscores the rights of adults to make their own decisions regarding personal relationships under Indian law.
The affidavit signed by Shruti, to enter into a live-in relationship with Mubarak, contains significant clauses regarding their future. It states that if they decide to marry, the ceremony would be conducted in accordance with Sharia law, through a Nikah ceremony. This detail is particularly notable as it implies a religious aspect to their potential future marriage.
Furthermore, the affidavit, dated 18th December 2023, includes terms regarding the resolution of potential future disputes. It specifies that in the event of a separation, neither party would file legal complaints against the other, nor would they demand maintenance or lay claim to each other's financial assets or properties.
In the unfolding situation in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, Hindu activists played a pivotal role in the latest developments. According to their interaction with the media, they had a conversation with Shruti Tiwari, the girl at the center of the controversy. During this conversation, Shruti reportedly revealed that she had been lured by Mubarak Khan into eloping with him. However, crucially, she expressed a desire to return to her family.
In response to the unfolding events and public demonstrations, CSP (City Superintendent of Police) Abhishek Tiwari made his way to the protest site. There, he listened to the demands of the demonstrators, a move that indicates the police's responsiveness to public sentiment in this sensitive case. Following the interaction with the demonstrators, the Hindu activists communicated Shruti's wishes to the police. As a result, the police facilitated her return to her parents.
Updesh Rana, a leader of the Sanatan Sangh, made significant comments regarding the case. He emphasized the need for police monitoring of Mubarak Khan's activities and asserted that the Hindu activists would ensure such surveillance is carried out. Rana also claimed that campaigns of 'love jihad' – a term used to describe alleged efforts by Muslim men to convert Hindu women to Islam through marriage – are being systematically conducted in Damoh.
Further broadening the scope of his concerns, Rana referenced other contentious issues such as the Hijab scandal at Ganga Jamuna School and instances of religious conversion. He raised questions about the role and effectiveness of government administration in handling such matters. Rana stressed the importance of Hindu parents instilling proper values in their children, especially in the context of the increasing number of 'love jihad' cases in the region.

It has been revealed that Khan is already married and a father of three. He works as a driver of a loading vehicle, and it was through his job that he initially came into contact with Shruti Tiwari, the young woman involved in the case.
The circumstances of their meeting were ordinary yet fateful. Mubarak Khan was delivering goods to Shruti's house when they first met. Shruti's father, who works as a watchman in a warehouse, was facing financial difficulties. When the family needed to move, presumably due to the father's job transfer, they booked a vehicle for transporting their household items. Mubarak Khan, the driver of that vehicle, thus entered their lives. Over time, Khan and Shruti grew closer and began meeting each other regularly.
A significant turn of events occurred recently when Mubarak Khan took Shruti to the collector's office in Damoh, presumably to get married. However, their plans were interrupted by Hindu Karyakarta (activist) Updesh Rana's team. They intercepted the couple and handed them over to the police. Following this intervention, both Mubarak Khan and Shruti Tiwari are now in the custody of Damoh Dehat Police.

The latest update in this ongoing saga is that following the protests and the involvement of Hindu activists, Shruti was safely recovered and handed back to her parents. This resolution marks a significant moment in the case, reflecting the heightened community involvement and the role of law enforcement in managing such sensitive situations.
The case in Damoh has thus become a focal point for broader discussions about interfaith relationships, the influence of community groups, and the challenges of navigating personal freedoms against societal norms.
