"Error in identity, universal fallout": Fahad Qubati, an Arab Israeli from Nazareth, survives a violent attack in Greece after being mistaken for Jewish, amid growing antisemitism linked to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party and recent Middle East violence
In a harrowing incident in Greece, an Arab Israeli man from Nazareth, Fahad Qubati, aged 24, was subjected to a brutal attack due to a case of mistaken identity. The attackers reportedly assumed he was Jewish, which led to the violent assault. This attack occurred while Qubati was on a leisure trip in Greece, enjoying a vacation with family and friends.

Fahad Qubati is currently back in Israel, where he is undergoing medical treatment for the severe injuries he sustained. The injuries are particularly serious to his jaw and head, significantly impairing his ability to speak. He is receiving care at Baruch Padeh Medical Center in Poriya, which is located near Tiberias in the Galilee region. Reports indicate that Qubati is scheduled for multiple surgeries to address the extensive damage inflicted during the attack.
The assault on Qubati took a critical turn when the assailants concluded that he was not Jewish but an Arab Christian, leading them to cease their attack. This revelation likely saved his life. Jacqueline Qubati, Fahad's mother, expressed her belief that her son narrowly escaped murder by this violent misidentification.
The circumstances leading up to the attack detail that Qubati had offered a ride to some Israeli tourists after a party on a Tuesday night. It appears the attackers mistakenly believed that Qubati was part of the Israeli group, which prompted them to target him. Following the attack, Qubati was urgently transported back to Israel on Wednesday evening for immediate medical attention.
Jacqueline Qubati, the mother of Fahad Qubati, who was recently assaulted in Greece, spoke candidly to the media about the terrifying ordeal her son endured. In an interview with Ynet News, she recounted the critical moments that led to the attack and the intervention that potentially saved her son's life. "Nothing could persuade them until a Tunisian citizen intervened and helped my son prove he was Arab. Only then did they apologize and flee. It could have ended in murder," she shared, highlighting the grave danger her son was in.
The incident unfolded when Fahad, along with some Israeli passengers, was playing Israeli music in his vehicle. After dropping off his passengers at their initial pickup location, three Greek residents confronted him, effectively blocking his vehicle. They questioned his origin, and upon hearing he was from Israel, they commenced their assault. Despite Fahad's attempts to clarify his Arab identity, the beating continued relentlessly until a Tunisian man stepped in. The man's assistance in proving Fahad's Arab Christian identity, notably by pointing out he was wearing a cross, was instrumental in stopping the attackers, who then hurriedly fled the scene.
The emotional toll on Qubati's family has been substantial. Jacqueline expressed her profound sadness and concern over the incident, stating, "I’m deeply saddened by this shocking incident. Thank God my son returned alive. It saddens me that the security situation endangers the lives of Israeli tourists abroad. I want the world to know what my son went through." Her words reflect a mother's distress and a plea for greater awareness and safety for Israelis traveling overseas, highlighting the broader implications of such identity-based attacks on international soil.

Escalation in Antisemitic Incidents Linked to Various Factors in Greece
Research conducted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in 2014 shed light on concerning trends within Greece, revealing that approximately 69% of the Greek population exhibited antisemitic attitudes at that time. This statistic positioned Greece as having the highest level of antisemitic sentiment outside of the Middle East, based on comparisons with 100 other nations. This groundbreaking poll underscored the pervasive nature of such attitudes within Greek society.
In response to these alarming findings, there has been a concerted effort by the Greek government and state institutions to tackle antisemitism more effectively. Over the past five years, these efforts have reportedly met with some degree of success, demonstrating a growing awareness and proactive stance against this deep-seated issue.
The ADL has identified several factors contributing to the rise of antisemitism in Greece. Key among these is the influence of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which has been particularly notable. Additionally, the financial crisis and recent surges in nationalist sentiment have further fueled antisemitic sentiments. Moreover, violent events in the Middle East often precipitate increased incidents of antisemitism, linking global events with local attitudes and behaviors.
The increase in antisemitic incidents is not isolated to Greece but is part of a broader global uptick in violence against Jews and Israelis, particularly highlighted following the Hamas terror attack on October 7 and the subsequent war with the terror group. These developments underscore the volatile and often reactive nature of antisemitic violence, reflecting broader geopolitical dynamics that impact local and global Jewish communities.
