A grim scene awaited the Detroit Police Department when they arrived at Woll's residence. A disturbing trail of blood led them to her home, located in the 1300 block of Joliet Place in Detroit, where her lifeless body lay.
In light of the gravity of the incident, local law enforcement has sought assistance from the FBI to uncover the details of this horrifying event. The backdrop of this heinous crime is set against rising tensions between Jewish and Muslim communities across the United States. These tensions have been exacerbated by the Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted in southern Israel on October 7, following aggressive actions by the Gaza-based terror group.
Upon discovering Woll's body, emergency personnel reported she had sustained multiple stab wounds. Following the traces of blood, officers were led to her nearby home, where it's believed the murder took place. The police have yet to determine a clear motive behind this killing, stating that the reason remains "unknown." The community awaits further clarity as investigations progress.

The Detroit branch of the FBI has confirmed their involvement, stating their intent to "assist the Detroit Police Department as requested."
While the Jewish community is grappling with the weight of this tragedy, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit moved swiftly to communicate with its members. Officials of the federation, in touch with security and law enforcement agencies, clarified that, as of now, "No evidence has been shared to indicate this was a targeted act motivated by antisemitism." The statement on their Facebook page conveyed the community's collective sentiment, expressing the urgency to understand the events leading to Samantha's untimely death. They also emphasized the absence of any known threats.
Beyond her leadership role at the synagogue since 2022, Woll was also a prominent figure in political circles. Her active involvement in Democratic Party affairs was evident through her work with US congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and her contribution to the campaign of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. The magnitude of her loss, both to the community and the political realm, is palpable.
As the co-chair of the American Jewish Committee’s ACCESS Detroit Young Leadership Program, Woll embodied the spirit of leadership and youth empowerment. Her visionary initiatives, like the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit, stand as testaments to her unwavering commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and harmony.
Detroit Jewish News, in 2017, recognized her tireless endeavors by featuring her in their esteemed list of '36 under 36', a tribute to her contributions to the community.
In the wake of the November 2015 Paris attacks, when the world seemed more divided than ever, Woll stepped up, championing unity among young minds. She orchestrated an essay and art contest for high school students of Muslim and Jewish backgrounds at Wayne State University. This initiative, led by the Greater Detroit Muslim Jewish Solidarity Council, reflected her dedication to building bridges of understanding.
Her political acumen was evident as she played a pivotal role during Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin's campaign, serving as the deputy district director from 2019 to 2021. Furthermore, her association with Attorney General Dana Nessel's re-election campaign showcased her dedication to public service.
Taking the helm as the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in 2022, Woll's leadership was both cherished and celebrated. Today, as the city reels from her tragic passing, both Jewish and Democratic circles are enveloped in profound grief, remembering a leader who embodied unity and progress.
Attorney General Dana Nessel took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to voice her anguish. “I am shocked, saddened and horrified to learn of Sam’s brutal murder. Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known,” Nessel lamented, encapsulating the sentiments of many who knew Woll personally.
Michigan's Governor Gretchen Whitmer didn't hold back her emotions, describing Woll’s death as heartbreaking. In a move that underscores the gravity of the situation, she announced that Michigan State Police would assist the Detroit Police Department in the investigation. Highlighting Woll's radiant personality, the governor remarked, “She was a source of light, a beacon in her community who worked hard to make Michigan a better place.”
Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, reflecting the collective sentiment, expressed her devastation on X, stating she was “heartbroken at this news.”
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan encapsulated the city's sentiment, voicing his devastation over Woll’s untimely departure. “Sam’s loss has left a huge hole in the Detroit community,” the mayor declared. He further added, “This entire city joins with her family and friends in mourning her tragic death.”
