"मिज़ाज काफ़िराना": Chilkur Balaji temple priest requests Telangana government to preserve the sanctity of sacred land, as Bajrang Dal protests the construction of a mosque near the revered site, claiming the land was wrongfully labeled as 'Waqf property'

In a recent unfolding of events at Chilkur, Telangana, the sanctity of the Chilkur Balaji temple, a revered site, has come under potential threat, prompting action from local religious groups and community leaders. The Bajrang Dal, a prominent Hindu organization, has openly warned the Congress administration of "severe consequences" should there be any compromise to the sacredness of this temple. The group is vehemently opposing the construction of a mosque, which they claim is being unlawfully built on what is being portrayed as waqf land.

During a protest, the members of Bajrang Dal expressed their concerns, stating that no construction pertaining to other religions should be allowed near the temple premises. Their demand is clear: the immediate demolition of the mosque currently under construction near this sacred site. The protesters argue that the ongoing construction efforts are an attempt to misrepresent a plot of land in the Chilkur neighborhood as waqf property, which they believe is inappropriate given the religious significance of the area.
Adding a voice to the protest, CS Rangarajan, the Archaka (priest) of Chilkur Balaji Devasthanam, emphasized the historical and spiritual importance of the land surrounding the temple. He said, “The ground surrounding the Chilkur Balaji temple is holy and has existed for a very long period. Just like the land surrounding Tirupati Balaji temple is revered, the area surrounding Chilkur Balaji temple is equally sacred and the Lord is the rightful owner because Lord Venkateshwara has manifested himself in Cilkur. This is not a place for houses of worship for other religions.” Rangarajan further highlighted the responsibility of local authorities, including police, revenue, and other departments, to ensure that the sanctity of the area is preserved as per the traditions and beliefs of the temple devotees.

Continuing the discourse on the contentious issue surrounding the Chilkur Balaji temple, CS Rangarajan, the temple's priest, further expressed his concerns regarding the construction activities in proximity to the temple. He emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity and ownership of the land, which holds deep spiritual significance to the devotees. Rangarajan stated, “There is a new masjid (mosque) being built within two kilometres of the temple. They are our brothers as well, and we love and respect them, but this is a request to the government and those building masjids that the land’s sanctity and proprietorship be upheld. This is our respectful plea to the administration and collector’s office. The government should ensure that no new places of worship for any other religion are permitted to be built here.” His words reflect a plea for mutual respect among different religious communities while advocating for the preservation of the temple’s revered environment.
Amid these appeals, the situation escalated when Bajrang Dal leaders intensified their opposition to the mosque's construction, which they perceive as an infringement on the sacredness of the Chilkur area. According to a report by VSK Telangana, these leaders demanded the immediate removal of the mosque, accusing it of being unlawfully built. They criticized the current Congress administration for what they termed as Muslim appeasement and vowed to expose what they describe as the oppressive and biased actions of the party towards Muslim interests. This conflict reached a peak when a substantial number of Hindu activists, under the banner of Bajrang Dal, staged a large demonstration, which eventually led to the authorities dismantling the contested structure.

In the wake of heightened tensions surrounding the construction near the Chilkur Balaji temple, the role of local authorities has come under scrutiny. Shivaramulu, the state convenor of Bajrang Dal, has taken a firm stand against what he perceives as administrative malpractices in handling the land issues. He pointedly demanded the suspension of the local tehsildar, accusing him of falsifying reports to favor the construction of the mosque by wrongly declaring the private land as waqf land. "He accused that after bowing before the Muslim MLC and digging borewells at the site, the police themselves were present and terrorising the locals while carrying out construction work." Shivaramulu’s allegations suggest a collusion between certain officials and members of the Muslim community, which he claims has led to intimidation tactics against local Hindus. He sternly warned of a strong response from the Hindu community against these actions perceived as conspiratorial.
The situation gained further attention when CS Rangarajan, representing the spiritual leadership of the Chilkur Balaji temple, called upon the authorities to seriously consider their concerns about the sanctity of the land. His intervention, along with the concerted protest by Hindu activists, prompted the District Collector to act decisively. Acknowledging the gravity of the issue and the potential for escalating conflict, the Collector immediately ordered a halt to the mosque’s construction. This swift response was crucial in mitigating the immediate crisis, reflecting the administration's recognition of the sensitivity of the matter. "The protestors had warned that a demonstration would be launched if the construction continued."
