‘Save madrasas and mazars’: Mastermind behind Bhagwa Love Trap conspiracy theory asks Muslims to vote for Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT)

In a significant move just before the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, prominent Islamist leaders in Pune district, Maharashtra, have made a public appeal to the Muslim community. They are urging Muslims across Pune and neighboring constituencies—Shirur, Baramati, and Mawal—to cast their votes in favor of the candidates from Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). This call to action was issued during a well-attended event titled ‘Taqreer By Hazrat Maulana Sajjad Nomani’, which took place under the auspices of Kul Jamati Tanzeem Pune in the Kondwa region on May 2nd.

The event, which drew considerable attention, featured various speakers. However, the highlight was the video that captured widespread attention on the internet, showcasing one of the event's organizers. In the video, the organizer emphatically declared their resolute support for the Congress and NCP Sharad Pawar faction. This endorsement is seen as a strategic move to consolidate Muslim votes in these areas, potentially influencing the electoral outcomes in these significant constituencies.

At a event in the Kondwa region, organized to honor Maulana Sajjad Nomani, the Kul Jamati Tanzeem announced its support for specific political candidates in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The organizer of the event was recorded stating, “Kul Jamati Tanzeam has decided to extend support to Ravindra Dhangekar from Pune representing Congress, Supriya Sule and Amol Kolhe from Baramati and Shirur representing NCP Sharad Pawar faction, and Sanjay Waghere from Maval representing Shiv Sena (UBT). We support these four candidates and appeal to all community members to please get them elected to power. Also, ask your family members and friends to vote for them.”

The declaration was part of a larger gathering where Maulana Sajjad Nomani addressed the attendees. He spoke on the theme ‘Maujuda Halat Aur Hamari Zimmedari’ (the current situation and our responsibility), highlighting the significance of voting and community involvement in the electoral process. During his speech, Nomani encouraged every Muslim who is eligible to vote to actively participate and support the community through their electoral choices.

Maulana Sajjad Nomani delivered a pointed message regarding potential government policies that could impact the Muslim community negatively. He stated, "If you don’t exercise your right in the correct direction, your nation is such that it will forget the Rohingyas. The leader of this country has a plan to put an end to the Waqf system in this country. It is you who will save our Madarsas and Masjids and Mazars. This one plan of Modi is going to cause danger to the entire Muslim community," as captured in the video with a timestamp of 1:05. Nomani's words were intended to instigate the Muslim community, highlighting the stakes involved in the upcoming elections and the importance of their participation to safeguard their religious and cultural institutions.

The event also served as a platform to remind the community of the election schedule, informing attendees that the voting for the Baramati constituency had already occurred on May 7, 2024, and that the elections for Shirur, Pune, and Maval constituencies are scheduled for May 13, 2024. This information is crucial for ensuring that community members are prepared and aware of the dates to exercise their voting rights.

Nomani furthered the theory of ‘Bhagwa Love Trap’

Maulana Sajjad Nomani, a notable figure within certain circles of the Muslim community, has been vocal about a controversial issue known as the 'Bhagwa Love Trap.' According to Nomani, this situation involves Hindu men allegedly engaging in deceptive relationships with Muslim women, leading to adverse consequences for the women involved. He has pointed to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), claiming that this organization has systematically prepared a cadre of young Hindu men for this purpose. Nomani's assertions have sparked considerable discussion and controversy.

In one of his statements, Nomani claimed, “8 lakh Muslim women have turned infidel and left Islam after meeting their Hindu partners. RSS has created a team of Hindu youths who are trained in Islamic teachings and Urdu. They are then instructed to lure Muslim women into a love trap,” as heard in a widely circulated video.

Maulana Sajjad Nomani has further detailed his concerns about what he describes as the 'Bhagwa Love Trap'. He alleges that Hindu men involved in this supposed scheme are rewarded significantly. Nomani claims that "such Hindu men are then rewarded with Rs 2.5 lakhs, a house, and a job," which he suggests acts as an incentive during times of high unemployment within the Hindu community.

In another controversial statement, Nomani addresses the education of Muslim women. A member of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, in one of his videos, declared that "sending girls to schools and colleges alone is forbidden (Haram) in Islam." Building on this, Nomani himself has made a stern declaration about the consequences for Muslim parents who allow their daughters to attend educational institutions unaccompanied. He asserts that "those parents who send their daughters to educational institutes alone will be condemned to Hell (Jahannum)." Moreover, he emphasized that Muslim girls should always be accompanied, reinforcing his stance on this issue by stressing the importance of not leaving them unaccompanied, regardless of whether they wear a hijab.

Maulana Sajjad Nomani has made additional comments regarding the supervision of Muslim daughters, emphasizing strict guardianship regardless of the precautions they may take. He stated, "It does not matter even if the daughter is wearing a hijab and going to college, she is not to be left unaccompanied." Alongside this directive, Nomani expressed a broader societal responsibility, declaring, "If you are a father, a Muslim, or a good person, it is Haram to be careless about your daughter." These remarks suggest a call for increased vigilance and oversight by Muslim families over their female members, potentially introducing a new form of community watchfulness.

In a broader context, these discussions are unfolding during a critical time in India, as the country is in the midst of conducting its general elections. These elections are scheduled to run from April 19 to June 1, 2024, across seven phases to elect 543 members to the Lok Sabha. The completion of the voting process will be followed by the counting of votes and the announcement of results on June 4, 2024. This electoral period is pivotal for the nation, and the outcomes could significantly influence the social and political landscape in which Nomani’s remarks and the responses to them are situated.
