Amidst Umling-la's peaks at 19,024 feet, the world's highest international fashion show set a record, Models showcased India's ethos and Ladakh's Pashmina with unprecedented fusion of fashion and culture, resonating with 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'
In a breathtaking feat of altitude and style, 'Umling-la', the world’s highest motorable road at 19,024 feet, added another world record to its name. On Thursday, 28 September, it successfully hosted the world's highest international fashion show. This extraordinary event, a part of the Vibrant Ladakh festival, witnessed international models from a staggering 14 countries coming together to walk the ramp amidst the serene backdrop of the Himalayas.
The details, provided by an official on Saturday, 30 September, revealed that the show was not just a display of fashion but a confluence of art, culture, and international collaboration. The Vibrant Ladakh festival, under which the fashion event was organized, is a celebration of the region's rich heritage, and its commitment to merging tradition with modernity.
The Union Territory Ladakh Administration and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, took the helm in organizing this high-altitude spectacle. They collaborated with the Ladakh Art and Entertainment Alliance. Notably, the endeavor also received the backing of the Indian Army and Border Roads Organisation, highlighting the collective spirit behind this event.
Ladakh, known for its pristine landscapes and age-old monasteries, has always been a top destination for adventurers and travelers. With this successful fashion show, it has etched itself as a location where tradition, nature, and modern fashion converge in harmony.

Such an endeavor pushes the boundaries of what's possible, making us reimagine the fusion of fashion, culture, and nature. It will be interesting to see how such events pave the way for more innovative and out-of-the-box concepts in the future, reinforcing Ladakh's position as a place of wonder and innovation.
Ladakh's Umling-la fashion show was more than just a display of sartorial elegance at high altitudes. With international participation that included models from around the world and two representing Ladakh itself, the event was symbolic of a grander vision. It encapsulated the essence of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, a Sanskrit phrase that translates to 'The World is One Family'. This isn't just a motto; it's a worldview that India has long embraced, and this event seemed to personify that spirit.
The fashion show was not merely about global unity. The spotlight was also on the precious GI tagged Pashmina of Ladakh, a pride of the region. Recognizing its value, the event aimed to promote sustainable and responsible tourism, underlining the importance of conserving traditions and environments alike.

The official further highlighted that the outfits adorning the models weren't just a preview of the latest trends. They introduced the vibrant colour palette earmarked for spring and summer of 2024. More significantly, these costumes showcased products crafted from the region’s prized Pashmina, originating in the Changthang region of Ladakh. This inclusion not only celebrates the luxury and elegance of Pashmina but also draws attention to the skilled craftsmanship of the local artisans.
Such a blend of tradition with contemporary fashion indicates a paradigm shift in how fashion events are perceived. Gone are the days when they were only about flaunting the latest designs. Today, they're platforms that echo deeper messages about cultural heritage, sustainability, and global unity, as the Umling-la fashion show so beautifully demonstrated.

The unprecedented event at Umling-la, now recorded in the annals of world records, didn't go unnoticed. Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor of LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, took a moment to acknowledge the gravity of this accomplishment. With a touch of pride in his voice, he lauded the world record set at such a formidable altitude. However, what truly seemed to impress him was the 'historic participation' of ambassadors from approximately 14 nations. This wasn't just a local event; it was a global showcase, aptly named the Ladakh International Fashion Runway.
Gyalson, not missing a beat, took this opportunity to extend heartfelt gratitude towards India's leadership. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Their role? A pivotal decision from the Home Ministry that allowed foreign tourists, including the international models gracing the event, to reside in Hanle. This decision was instrumental in ensuring the seamless execution of the show, as it enabled the models to stay overnight in close proximity to the event venue.
Such endorsements from key figures and the collaborative spirit of national leaders underscore the significance of the event. It wasn't just a fashion show; it was a statement, a testament to unity, and a celebration of the rich tapestry of cultures that India, and the world, has to offer.
The fourth chapter in this captivating tale is Gyalson's focus on the age-old Indian philosophy, 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', which translates to 'the world is one family'. His admiration for the spirit of this philosophy was not only evident in his words but also in the actions taken during the event.
The unity among nations was symbolized in a profound ceremony. As the foundation stone was laid for the awe-inspiring Buddha Statue at Umling-la, a unique integration took place. The sands carried by the international models, each representing their homeland, were seamlessly merged. This act, while symbolic, resonated deeply with the underlying message of the fashion show. It was a celebration of unity, a testament to the belief that while we might hail from different parts of the world, we share a common bond.
However, the success of the event wasn't just attributed to the participants and organizers. Gyalson took a moment to spotlight the commendable administrative support extended by two stalwarts - the Indian Army and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Their contribution ensured that the event unfolded smoothly, even at such a challenging altitude.
Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, too, weighed in on the aftermath of the historic event. He foresaw these unique ventures as pivotal catalysts in promoting and strengthening 'Border Tourism'. And in his eyes, this newfound emphasis on Border Tourism could be credited to the forward-thinking approach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Yakzee's words echoed the sentiments of many. This wasn't just an event; it was a step towards a future where borders aren't barriers but bridges, fostering understanding, unity, and collaboration.
