The largest existing Pagan faith today is Hindu Dharma and its sub-groups Buddhism, Jainism, et al. Pagan faiths have existed worldwide like in the Americas where the cultural genocide of indigenous communities by Christians virtually wiped out these belief systems. Parts of south-east Asia which also experienced colonization still have tribes and groups following animism (worship of spirits, belief in all inanimate and animate objects having souls), worship of nature, worship of ancestors and other such Pagan beliefs.

Several months ago, BBC had published an article based on a pseudo-historical legend. The article states Avarna (low caste women) from Kerala were not allowed to wear upper garments and used to pay ‘breast tax’ to cover their breasts. The article also states that, to protest this, a low caste Avarna woman named Nangeli from Ezhava caste chopped off her breasts and presented it to the tax officials. It was later published in ‘The News Minute’ as well by Supriya Unni Nair, when CBSE removed this section from its social science textbook.

The communist regime in Kerala issued a strange order on 30th November threatening pay cuts to government employees who wish to make the pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple.  It is seen as a move clearly aimed at discouraging Hindu state government employees from visiting Sabarimala. Incidentally, CM Pinarayi Vijayan holds the home portfolio too.

On Friday, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi triggered a major controversy after suggesting that if left alone with his daughter or sister, a man can end up raping them. The highly contentious and obnoxious remarks were made by the senior politician during a conversation with News 18’s anchor Amish Devgan where the duo was debating the recent decision to increase marriageable age of women to 21.

Ambaji administration has withdrawn the order banning loudspeakers in the hawanshala after backlash from the Hindu society. Kutch Sant Samaj President Yogi Devnath had on Saturday taken to Twitter to register protest against the ban of loudspeakers in the temple complex.
