In a significant development for the Indian Army, a second procurement contract has been signed through the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program. The contract pertains to the acquisition of the indigenously developed 'Tactical LAN Radio,' and the signing took place in New Delhi with the presence of Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, the Vice Chief of Army Staff.

The development of a tactical LAN (Local Area Network) solution is a crucial part of the 'Make in India' initiative, which aims to foster indigenous manufacturing and technological advancements, particularly for challenging terrains and remote areas where secure tactical LANs are needed.

The 'Tactical LAN Radio' represents state-of-the-art, high-bandwidth backhaul wireless radio equipment that ensures reliable and fail-safe communication. This solution offers an extended communication range and incorporates an embedded frequency hopping mechanism to prevent interception, allowing for long-range point-to-multipoint, high-bandwidth communication.

Furthermore, the system includes enhanced safety features and boasts an impressive 48-hour continuous operation on a single set basis without any breakdown.

By signing this contract, the Indian Army has taken a proactive step in demonstrating its commitment to the iDEX program. This marks the second contract signed under iDEX, highlighting the Army's recognition of the program's importance in promoting indigenous innovations and technological advancements.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2018, iDEX aims to establish an ecosystem that encourages innovation and technological development in the defense and aerospace sectors. The program achieves this by engaging various stakeholders, including research and development institutes, academia, industries (including micro, small, and medium enterprises), start-ups, and individual innovators. iDEX provides grants, funding, and other support to facilitate research and development with potential for future adoption by the Indian Defense and Aerospace Organization.

Over the past four years, iDEX, through the Defense Innovation Organization, has emerged as a leader in establishing connections with start-ups and innovators in the defense sector. The program has gained significant traction within the defense start-up community.

Currently, the Indian Army has 42 projects involved in the Defense India Start-up Challenge (DISC), Open Challenges, and the iDEX PRIME scheme. These projects aim to address challenges faced by the Indian Army by developing cutting-edge solutions. For each challenge, a dedicated nodal officer and an 'A'-category establishment as a 'Center of Excellence' have been appointed to provide continuous support and guidance to the 41 start-ups involved in these projects. Additional iDEX projects for the Indian Army are in the final stages of approval, and contracts for these projects are expected to be finalized shortly.

Through its active participation in iDEX and its investment in indigenous innovation, the Indian Army is enhancing its capabilities and fostering the development of advanced technologies. This approach not only strengthens the nation's defense sector but also bolsters the 'Make in India' initiative by promoting self-reliance and technological advancements in the country.

Tactical LAN Radio Features

The 'Tactical LAN Radio' is a cutting-edge communication equipment developed indigenously for the Indian Army. It offers a range of features and capabilities that make it a crucial asset in military operations. Here are some of the notable features and the importance of the Tactical LAN Radio:

  1. High-Bandwidth Backhaul: The radio equipment provides a high-bandwidth backhaul capability, enabling the transmission of large volumes of data quickly and efficiently. This feature is particularly valuable in modern warfare scenarios where real-time information exchange is vital for situational awareness, decision-making, and coordination.

  2. Secure Communication: The Tactical LAN Radio incorporates advanced security measures to ensure secure and reliable communication. It utilizes embedded frequency hopping mechanisms that make interception and eavesdropping extremely difficult. This feature enhances the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive military communications, protecting them from unauthorized access.

  3. Long-Range Point-to-Multipoint Communication: With its long-range capabilities, the radio equipment enables point-to-multipoint communication over extended distances. This is crucial in scenarios where troops and units are dispersed across challenging terrains or remote areas. The Tactical LAN Radio allows for seamless and high-bandwidth communication between multiple locations, facilitating effective coordination and collaboration among different units.

  4. Enhanced Safety Features: The system is designed with enhanced safety features to withstand the rigors of military operations. It can operate continuously for 48 hours on a single set basis without any breakdown, ensuring uninterrupted communication even in demanding environments. This reliability is essential for maintaining operational effectiveness and situational awareness during extended missions or critical situations.

The importance of the Tactical LAN Radio for the Indian Army lies in its contribution to overall operational capabilities and effectiveness. Here are a few key reasons:

  1. Improved Command and Control: Effective communication is essential for command and control functions in the military. The Tactical LAN Radio provides the Indian Army with a reliable and secure means of communication, enabling commanders to issue orders, relay critical information, and coordinate operations efficiently. This enhances the Army's command and control capabilities, leading to better decision-making and mission success.

  2. Enhanced Situational Awareness: With the high bandwidth and secure communication capabilities of the Tactical LAN Radio, real-time information sharing and exchange become more feasible. This contributes to improved situational awareness across the battlefield, enabling commanders and soldiers to make informed decisions based on up-to-date information. It helps in identifying and responding to threats promptly and effectively.

  3. Improved Collaboration and Coordination: The long-range point-to-multipoint communication feature of the Tactical LAN Radio facilitates seamless collaboration and coordination among units, even in challenging and remote areas. It enables the sharing of tactical data, intelligence, and operational plans, fostering a more cohesive and synchronized approach to military operations. This strengthens the overall effectiveness of the Indian Army's collective efforts.

  4. Indigenous Technological Advancement: The development and procurement of the Tactical LAN Radio under the 'Make in India' initiative highlights the nation's commitment to self-reliance and indigenous technological advancements. By relying on domestically developed equipment, the Indian Army reduces dependency on foreign sources and strengthens its defense capabilities. It also promotes the growth of the domestic defense industry and contributes to the overall socio-economic development of the country.

In conclusion, the Tactical LAN Radio's features and importance lie in its ability to provide high-bandwidth, secure, and reliable communication in military operations.
