Assam: Parents Held for Allegedly Pouring Hot Oil on 3-Year-Old daughter

In a harrowing incident in Assam’s Cachar district, a young couple was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to harm their three-year-old daughterin an unimaginably cruel way. The arrest was made possible through the swift intervention of District Child Protection officers, according to local police authorities.

The mother, 22-year-old Jaba Das, is accused of pouring hot oil on her daughter as a punishment for his excessive crying. This distressing act reportedly occurred on Friday evening, as stated by the neighbors who were aware of the situation. The father, Rajdeep Das, who works as a driver, has also been implicated in this appalling case.

The local community was stunned by the severity of the punishment meted out to the young child. Described by officials as an extreme disciplinary measure, the parents resorted to using hot oil on their daughter due to his continuous whining. The incident, which took place in Silchar, was reported to authorities on Saturday, triggering immediate action by law enforcement and child protection agencies.

The case has sparked a broader discussion on child welfare and parental responsibility in the region, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and intervention in matters of child abuse. The authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to this cruel act, ensuring the child receives the necessary care and protection moving forward.

The situation escalated to a dire emergency when the three-year-old infant was rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in a critical condition, highlighting the severity of his injuries. The abusive behavior of the parents had culminated in this tragic outcome, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement.

Following the incident, the police swiftly took action, arresting the mother, Jaba Das, and the father, Rajdeep Das. This decisive response came as the community reeled from the shock of the cruelty inflicted on such a young child.

The episode unfolded at the family's residence on Factory Lane, situated on Sonai Road, within the oversight of the Rangirkhari Police town outpost. The actions taken by the parents did not escape the attention of the community, leading to their quick arrest and highlighting the community's alertness to acts of child abuse.

Neighbours had previously observed troubling behavior from the mother towards the child. It was not the first instance of abuse; the mother reportedly had a history of physically beating the child. The repetitive nature of this abuse had alarmed the community.

One concerned neighbour described the intervention that led to the authorities' involvement: “Suspecting something unusual, we informed the child helpline. We suspect that the mother poured hot oil on her kid because he was crying too much.” This alert by the neighbours to the child helpline was crucial in bringing the situation to light and ensuring the safety of the child.

The incident that led to the critical condition of the three-year-old child in Assam took a darker turn as more details emerged about the circumstances. The couple, who had been living in a rented space along with their daughter for several years, faced a particularly distressing day last Friday. Sources close to the family revealed that the child's continuous crying had severely irritated the parents. In an alarming escalation of their attempts to quiet her, both parents took turns inflicting pain, ultimately resorting to pouring hot oil on the child. This caused the young girl excruciating pain and left her unconscious.

Upon realizing the severity of their actions and seeing that the child had become unresponsive, the parents panicked and fled their home. Their sudden departure was quickly noticed by the vigilant neighbors, who had become increasingly concerned by the unusual noises. These neighbors promptly alerted the Rangirkhari Police and also made a distress call to a child helpline.

Responding to these alerts, the police alongside a child helpline team swiftly arrived at the scene. They found the young girl in an unconscious state and immediately rushed her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for urgent medical attention.

At the hospital, District Child Protection officers were involved in the case and provided an update on the child's condition. They confirmed that the girl was rescued with several burn injuries, which were severe enough to require immediate and extensive treatment. The officials handling the case have indicated that they are thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to these tragic events.

An official from the team stated, “The burn injuries were caused by either hot oil or some hot utensils. We’ll talk to the child once he gets well,” underscoring their commitment to understanding the full extent of the abuse once the child is stable enough to provide insights into the horrific ordeal.

The Rangirkhari police outpost officer in charge, Himakshi Nath, confirmed the arrest of the parents involved in the brutal abuse of their three-year-old child. The couple was apprehended in the Sonai Road area of the town, where they had been residing. Nath detailed the legal actions taken against them, stating, "A case has been registered against the couple under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 335 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 326 (causing severe injuries using various dangerous means or instruments), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015."

During a conversation with HT on Saturday, Nath elaborated on the ongoing proceedings: “The child is under treatment at SMCH, and the parents are going through interrogation. We are investigating the matter further.” This statement underscores the severity of the case and the extensive legal and medical efforts involved in addressing the situation.

Medical professionals at SMCH provided further grim details about the child's condition. According to the doctors, the child has sustained multiple burn injuries, alarmingly including injuries to the private areas of his body. The medical assessment revealed a troubling history: “Some injuries are fresh while some look a bit old. It seems the child was facing torture for several days,” indicating a prolonged period of abuse that had escalated to the critical incident.

In addition to police action, members of the child helpline team played a crucial role in the rescue operation. A helpline team member recounted the events, saying, "At around 10 am today we received a call that at Sonai Road, a child was burnt by its parents. We arrived as soon as possible and found the Rangirkhari Police there. We found the child with severe burn marks on its body and immediately we rushed her to SMCH with the help of a police detail." The landlord's proactive step of filing an FIR was pivotal, and the neighbors’ quick response to the situation was instrumental in bringing the authorities to the scene promptly.

The horrific plight of a three-year-old girl in Silchar has revealed a chilling narrative of child abuse. The child sustained severe burn injuries to various parts of her body, including her stomach, chest, and upper lips, as a result of what authorities have described as inhuman atrocities. The ordeal was reportedly triggered by the child's persistent crying, a common behavior for someone of her age, which has incensed those familiar with the case.

In the immediate aftermath of the child's hospital admission, the police launched a rapid search operation for the accused parents. Demonstrating swift action, they successfully located and arrested the couple within hours. The promptness of the police response highlights their commitment to addressing such grave offenses with urgency.

During the interrogation process, the parents admitted to the crime, revealing that they were overwhelmed by their daughter's constant crying. Despite their confession, the police have expressed concerns that there may be deeper, undisclosed motives behind the brutal act. This suspicion has led investigators to continue their probe, ensuring no aspect of the case is overlooked.

Further complicating the matter, police speculate that the initial intent of the parents might have been to kill the girl. After failing to achieve their alleged goal, they purportedly attempted to manipulate the narrative to escape accountability. The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover more details and provide a fuller understanding of the events leading to this tragic incident. The community and authorities alike await further developments, hoping for justice and measures to prevent such atrocities in the future.
