Telangana police lathi-charge innocent Hindu devotees at Komuravelli Temple during Mahashivaratri, igniting widespread anger against Revanth Reddy govt for violating fundamental & religious rights in Siddipet, Public outcry urges accountability & justice
In a deeply troubling event on Friday (8th March), the Komuravelli Temple in Siddipet district of Telangana, a place of great reverence and faith, became the site of an unwarranted act of violence. This incident occurred during the Mahashivaratri celebrations, a time when devotees come together in a spirit of devotion to observe one of the most sacred occasions in Hinduism. The temple, which usually serves as a beacon of peace and spirituality, was marred by an atmosphere of tension and chaos, not because of the devotees, but due to the mishandling by the police authorities.

Police Lathi Charge on Komuravelli Temple Devotees: Mahashivaratri, a night dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, brought devotees in droves to various Shaivakshetras across Telangana. Among these, the Komuravelli Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, a sanctified Shaivite shrine in Siddipet, saw an overwhelming influx of worshippers. However, this solemn gathering took an unfortunate turn when the police resorted to a lathi-charge against devotees who were merely seeking to partake in the yellow bandari at Peddapatnam, a traditional ritual that is a hallmark of devotion and reverence at the temple.
The events leading up to this distressing outcome began after the temple priests conducted the traditional pujas, opening the doors for devotees to seek the divine blessings of the deity. The anticipation and eagerness to receive darshan turned into a dire situation as some devotees, in their devotion, attempted to cross the barricades set up around the temple. They aimed to participate in the Yellow Bandari ritual, an act of faith and tradition at this sacred Shiva temple. This incident reflects not just a breakdown of order but a profound disrespect for the devotees' religious sentiments and practices.
The actions of the police, ostensibly for crowd control, raise serious questions about the respect for religious freedom and the right to peacefully observe one’s faith. It is imperative for both the police and the government of Telangana to recognize the sanctity of such occasions and handle them with the sensitivity they deserve. Using force against devotees, who were there to express their faith and partake in a sacred tradition, is not only excessive but also a violation of the principles of religious tolerance and respect.

As part of the Mahashivaratri celebrations, a significant ritual known as "Big Patnam" was meticulously prepared by one of the temple priests. This ritual featured 42 rows of Panchavarna laid out at the Thotabavi area of the temple grounds, an effort to bring the community together in a revered tradition. The preparations included a considerable security arrangement, with approximately 300 policemen deployed to oversee and manage the expected large gathering of devotees eager to partake in the "yellow bandari" ritual that followed the Big Patnam.
Despite these measures, the evening's peace was shattered when some devotees, driven by their deep devotion and possibly frustrated by the limitations placed upon their participation, attempted to overcome the physical barriers erected around the Patnam. They sought to climb and jump over the substantial fences, a testament to their eagerness to engage fully with the religious practices of the night. The police, faced with a situation rapidly slipping beyond their control, decided to use baton charges to manage the crowd—a decision that would lead to widespread criticism and dismay.
This forceful intervention by the police was not only directed at those attempting to breach the barricades but was applied indiscriminately, affecting even women among the crowd of devotees. This excessive use of force on a primarily peaceful assembly has sparked a significant backlash, with many witnesses and participants expressing their shock and outrage at the treatment meted out by the authorities.

Adding to the tension was the decision by the temple management to restrict access to the ritual, allowing only 75 devotees from 45 Dindis (groups) to participate directly. This limitation, reportedly a measure intended to ensure order and safety, instead contributed to the frustration and anger of many who found themselves excluded from a meaningful spiritual experience.
The absence of effective crowd control and a lack of understanding from the police resulted in disorder and unwarranted aggression, marring what was supposed to be a peaceful and spiritually uplifting event. Numerous devotees voiced their frustration and disappointment at the excessive use of force by law enforcement, criticizing the authorities for their handling of the situation. This incident has highlighted the need for better planning and more compassionate approaches to managing large gatherings, especially during significant religious celebrations.
In the wake of a deeply unsettling event at the Komuravelli Temple in Siddipet, Telangana, voices of dissent and concern have been rising on social media. Telangana BJP's treasurer, Shanthikumar, took to his X account to express his outrage, stating, "Atrocities of Revanth Reddy’s government against Hindus! At Komuravelli Temple in Siddipet district of Telangana, police baton-charged innocent devotees. The police didn’t even spare the women devotees. This is an attack on the fundamental rights of Hindus. Why such inhuman behaviour with the Hindus in the state, Revanth Reddy?" His post reflects a deep sense of betrayal and anger towards the government's actions against the devotees, highlighting a perceived infringement on the fundamental rights of Hindus.

Similarly, a well-known X user, Mr. Sinha, added to the chorus of disapproval with his post, "Hindu devotees are being beaten like this inside Komuravelli Temple in Congress-ruled Telangana. How can this be acceptable? They weren’t blocking roads, they weren’t causing inconvenience to common people, they were doing Puja inside their own temple." His words underscore the peaceful nature of the devotees' activities, questioning the justification behind such harsh measures.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of Mahashivaratri, a highly revered occasion that draws vast numbers of devotees to temples throughout Telangana. These temples, including the Vemulawada Rajarajeswara Swamy Temple and the Komuravelli Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, become centers of devotion, where believers engage in various rituals. "On the occasion of Shivratri, all the temples in Telangana are crowded with devotees. Devotees chanted the names of Lord Shiva with fasting initiations. When special pujas were organized in the temples, they participated in it. By doing special abhishek to Lingamayya.. and served. Keeping vigil all night.. Swami pleased them." This passage paints a picture of deep religious commitment and the peaceful observance of faith, further contrasting the peaceful intentions of the devotees with the violent response they received.
Amidst the turmoil surrounding the events at the Komuravelli Temple, political figures have started to voice their disapproval of the actions taken against the devotees. NCP leader Supriya Sule took to social media to express her condemnation of the police's use of batons on the devotees. She articulated her disbelief and dismay, stating, "What has never happened before has happened this year. Warikari has hundreds of years of tradition. There had never been an incident of force being used on the workers before this. Through his simple and easy teachings, Varakaris have shown direction to the country from time to time. Mauli's Dindi ceremony was marred by mismanagement by the administration. The lathi attack on the pilgrims who came for the Dindi festival is a very infuriating form. There is a need to investigate the guilty persons and take immediate action against them," emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the incident against a backdrop of a peaceful and historic tradition. Her words highlight the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for accountability and rectification.
Further adding to the criticism, Ajit Pawar, the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, has also condemned the police action, aligning with the growing consensus that the response to the devotees was unjustified and calls for a thorough examination.
Ajit Pawar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, described the situation with deep concern, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the police's actions. He stated, "The incident of police lathicharge on Varkari brothers during the departure ceremony of Santshrestha Dnyaneshwar Mauli's palanquin from Alandi is painful. This has not happened before in the history of Pandharpur Wari, which is the glory of saints and devotional tradition of Maharashtra," highlighting the significance of the event in the spiritual and cultural fabric of Maharashtra and expressing sorrow over the disturbance of a historically peaceful tradition.

Ajit Pawar further articulated the emotional impact of the day's events and the belief that the unfortunate incident could have been prevented with better planning. He said, "Today's incident is heartbreaking. This incident could have been avoided by proper planning of the ceremony. It would have come, but it did not happen. I strongly condemn the police lathi-charge on the workers and the government which lathi-charged them," expressing his dismay and calling for accountability. His words underscore a strong denunciation of the use of force and a call for reflection and action to ensure such incidents do not mar the observance of revered traditions in the future.
