Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab
The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab, has achieved a significant milestone by producing the country's first indigenous narrow-gauge rolling stock. These train coaches bear a striking resemblance to the red-colored Swiss narrow-gauge carriages, adding to their aesthetic appeal. Recently, the RCF unveiled four state-of-the-art Vistadome narrow-gauge coaches specifically designed for the heritage track. This development highlights the remarkable engineering capabilities of the RCF and marks a significant step forward in promoting indigenous manufacturing in the railway sector.
The recent developments surrounding the Kalka-Shimla Railway (KSR) have brought immense excitement, pride, and happiness to all involved. As a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site, the KSR has relied on coach designs that were created over a century ago by the Moghalpura Workshop, which is now part of the Pakistan Railway.
When the responsibility of designing and manufacturing the rolling stock of the KSR was entrusted to the Rail Coach Factory (RCF), the team encountered two major challenges. Firstly, they lacked digital data for modeling the narrow-gauge tracks, hindering the development and verification of the design. Secondly, there was a dearth of design assumptions, limitations, and validation procedures due to the original workshop's location in Pakistan.
Undeterred, the team at RCF embarked on a journey of innovation and creativity. They utilized old blueprints and sketches from the Kalka workshop to create 3D models, which served as the foundation for the development of new designs for bogies, shell superstructures, and furnishing.
After a rigorous process of refinement and approval, the proposed design received the Railway Board's final approval in February 2022. With the green light in hand, the RCF commenced the manufacturing of two prototype shells in September 2022. These prototypes underwent comprehensive testing by the esteemed Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) in October 2022. The tests encompassed static stress analysis to evaluate the coaches' performance under normal and overload conditions, ensuring their reliability and safety.
The successful progress achieved by the RCF and the positive outcomes of the testing phase has generated a wave of enthusiasm and pride among the officials involved. The innovative approach of utilizing limited resources and leveraging technology to recreate and improve the historical rolling stock has been a true triumph.
As the KSR continues its legacy as a beloved tourist attraction and a testament to India's rich railway heritage, the introduction of these new, indigenous designs brings joy and optimism for the future. The journey toward modernizing and revitalizing this iconic railway line has been a remarkable achievement, fostering a deep sense of fulfillment and happiness among all those who have contributed to its success.
December 2022 marked a moment of great excitement, pride, and happiness as two semi-furnished shells, consisting of an AC chair car and a power, luggage, and guard car, were transported by road to Kalka. These shells, expertly manufactured by the Kalka Workshop, were then paired with existing coaches of the older design, and the newly formed units underwent multiple trial runs along the Kalka-Shimla section.
During these trial runs, the coaches were put to the test, surpassing the current sectional speed to assess their stability and ride quality. The exhilaration of witnessing the successful performance of these coaches during the trials further heightened the sense of pride and joy among the officials involved.
Following the successful testing phase, the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) proceeded to develop the interiors of the coaches in accordance with the new design. Addressing the media in Kapurthala, RCF General Manager Ashesh Agrawal proudly announced the creation of four exquisite coaches: an AC executive car with 12 seats, an AC chair car with 24 seats, a non-AC chair car with 30 seats, and a power-cum-luggage and guard car. These beautifully crafted coaches were officially handed over to the Kalka railways, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards their eventual service on the heritage track.
However, before these coaches are put into regular service, they will undergo a trial run on the Kalka-Shimla line. Once they receive clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the highly anticipated date for their official flagging off will be determined by the esteemed Railway Board. The anticipation and happiness surrounding this momentous occasion are palpable, fueling the already strong sense of pride and excitement among the RCF team.
Ashesh Agrawal took great pleasure in highlighting the striking resemblance of the Vistadome coaches to the world-renowned Bernina Express of Switzerland, a train that operates on a mesmerizing mountainous rail track. This resemblance further adds to the excitement and sense of achievement associated with the development of these coaches.
The interior features of the Vistadome coaches are nothing short of extraordinary, designed to provide the utmost comfort and luxury to passengers. Noise and vibration-proofing measures ensure a serene journey, while anti-UV-coated window glasses protect against harsh sunlight. Bio-toilets, power windows in upper classes, darkening vista glass in upper classes, slide windows in second class, powered doors, heating/cooling package AC, linear concealed fans, and linear LED lights are just a few of the remarkable amenities offered.
To ensure a serene and peaceful journey, the coaches are equipped with advanced noise and vibration-proofing measures. This means that travelers can enjoy a tranquil environment, undisturbed by any external disturbances. Additionally, the coaches feature anti-UV-coated window glasses, which not only protect against the harsh rays of the sun but also provide a clear and unobstructed view of the stunning surroundings.
The amenities and facilities provided within the Vistadome coaches are truly second to none. Passengers in the upper classes are treated to power windows, allowing them to effortlessly control their immediate environment. In these upper-class compartments, darkening vista glass adds an extra touch of luxury, providing privacy and creating an intimate ambiance. For those traveling in the second class, slide windows offer the perfect opportunity to take in the fresh mountain air and capture breathtaking views.
The coaches are equipped with powered doors, ensuring smooth and hassle-free entry and exit for passengers. Inside, a state-of-the-art heating/cooling package ensures that travelers are kept comfortable regardless of the outside weather conditions. Linear concealed fans and linear LED lights further enhance the aesthetics of the coaches while providing ample illumination and ventilation.
The seating arrangements within the Vistadome coaches are nothing short of exceptional. Modular seating, reminiscent of aircraft design, features rail-mounted seats that can be effortlessly flipped back, providing optimum comfort and convenience. Executives are treated to a dedicated restaurant seating area, where luxurious seats offer the perfect setting for a delightful dining experience. Additionally, the coaches are equipped with a mini pantry and strategically placed luggage bins, ensuring that passengers can travel with ease and convenience.
The inclusion of a vestibule adds to the overall functionality and grandeur of the Vistadome coaches. It serves as a connecting link between different sections of the train, allowing for seamless movement and enhancing passenger convenience.
The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited in the design and construction of these coaches is truly remarkable. The Railway Board's decision to manufacture 30 Vistadome coaches for the Kalka-Shimla line is a testament to their exceptional quality and desirability. Each coach comes with a price tag of approximately Rs 1.3 crore, reflecting the investment in creating an unrivaled travel experience.
In summary, the interior features of the Vistadome coaches are beyond extraordinary. The attention to detail, luxurious amenities, and thoughtful design elements come together to create an environment that is nothing short of extraordinary. Passengers fortunate enough to embark on a journey aboard these coaches can expect a truly unforgettable and unparalleled experience.
The coaches also boast modular seating with aircraft-like rail-mounted seats that can be flipped back for convenience.
